Subscription cancelled
      #2569 - 03/02/04 08:58 AM

Here's one that I've not yet seen. I had a user sign up for my subscription which is $10 per year with automatic renewal. Their subscription went through just fine and we received the money. Now, over a month later her subscription was cancelled by PayPal for being declined by her credit card. I double checked and they didn't take the money back. What would cause this? I'm guessing it's a PayPal screw up.

This is still happening to me, i get maybe one or two a month.
it's a ballache more than anything else.
Whats the correct procedure to make them active again? The only way i can figure it out is by adding them for a new membership with the correct amount of days left, means i gotta find out when they signed up.

Well in this example - if a credit card rebill is attempted and it fails, then the user is removed from the group. That's the correct way it would be handled for a recurring subscription.

What issue are you having?

I'm getting subscriptions cancelled for no apparent reason.
I get an email from service@paypal saying the following:

Quote:

Dear Mondeo Enthusiasts Group,

Kevin Keane's subscription to Gold Members (kaizersoze) has been cancelled

I get probably a couple a month.
this then kicks them out of the gold group, so they lose access to certain forums.
What could be causing it?
This is happening after they have been a member for a while, this person above had been one for a few months.

Then either the re-bill failed (ie they didn't have money to pay the next month) or the user went into PayPal and cancelled their subscription. In either case, they are supposed to lose access at this point. You can look at the transaction details in your paypal account and see if the user cancelled it or the rebill failed etc....

But what you describe is correct functionality. You don't want to re-grant them access until you have funds for them.

If you have an active forum (lots of subscribers) you'll see this type of thing pretty much weekly. People come and go, decide to stop sending you money, or close their paypal accounts all the time.

it's not rebilling because everyone signs up for a minimum of a year, and i've only been running this a few months.
It's also not them cancelling as it's longstanding members of my site, who i know wouldnt cancel as they want access to the paid stuff.
Theres something else going on somewhere.

But you're getting the email from paypal? - that's where you'll need to investigate.

For some reason, PayPal is cancelling it. And whenever it gets cancelled at PayPal, the IPN signal is sent back to MyPaymentPal to remove their access.

If it were happening the other way around (My PaymentPal was sending them a PM) then there could be a problem with the software etc... but there's no way to cancel the subscription from MyPaymentPal - the only way to cancel a subscription is through www.PayPal.com. It's a one way system.

Hence when a user wants to cancel, you have to direct them to their paypal account, or you have to login in your paypal account and initiate cancellation. There's no mechinism in paypal for the software to cancel, you can only initiate signups.

So that's where you have to investigate. Check the transactions and find out why paypal cancelled the transaction. MPP just does what PayPal tells it to via IPN. But if you get an email, they are also sending you an IPN signal.

You said you're getting those emails from paypal, so that is being initiated from somewhere else - that can't come from your software.

Hope that helps!
